Tom Mercier, in a whopper of a debut performance, is a force of nature, but also written as an utter cipher of a character; the film recalls the episodic meandering of the New Wave, but there's never any positive clarity of purpose. We know what Yoav doesn't want, but it's hard to stay invested when escape is the only goal.
