    Captain Fantastic

    ★★★★★

Captain Fantastic is the movie I wish I had written. Plain and simple.

Matt Ross' film may just be my favorite of awards season. It was smart, funny, sad, and entirely original without being, you know... weird. (Although it is beautifully offbeat, and takes a couple liberties that, I suspect, wouldn't have made the final cut of a big-budget studio picture.)

    Jason Bourne

    ★★½

It's a Bourne movie. More topical, dealing with cyber security, but in my opinion, less engaging.

    Beauty and the Beast

    ★★★★

I've read several bad reviews of Beauty and the Beast, mostly from people whose advice I very much respect in terms of film, musicals and music in general. I'll say this: Watch without analyzing or comparing it to the source material. Watch it as a fan. Watch it with child-like wonderment. The film is fun and gorgeous.

    - Sure, Emma Watson's voice is auto-tuned (and British, even though Belle is French... but dammit if she doesn't look stunning).

    - Sure,…
