My boyfriend wanted to watch a movie that "is just about folks or slice of life" and I thought of how this was just sitting on a hard drive. I'm glad I finally watched it, it's like everything good about that particularly 70s realism but about women rather than the sort of stereotypical male viewpoint you'd associate with it, I loved it.
I don't even remember the list I saw it on which doesn't matter, it was one of the most satisfying hunts for a movie everyone seems to have talked about despite it being impossible to see.
The way she drifts through the different lives and sort of takes advantage even as she comes to like care or protect them in various ways, the way it felt like a story about being young and also old in Japan that was seemingly about a few lives but also about everyone's. It deserves to be more than a secret gem only a few people get to see.
