Good old solid non-elevated horror. The type of B-movie stuff that would have once found a home in VCRs and 14-year old slumber parties everywhere.
The mask does about 60% of the heavy lifting.

Brilliant. In my opinion, the most underrated of the Cohen’s movies. A sort of spiritual cousin to “Barton Fink,” only funnier and more weirdly relatable (who hasn’t felt like the world was literally against them).
During its theatrical release, this was the the last movie I saw at a local art house theater that was very beloved, but unfortunately had to shutter its doors due to changing times.
I remember at the time not really feeling interested in seeing it…
I love Sam Raimi. But this movie is not good.
Anyone who is saying “but Raimi pulls it out in the second half” (which I keep hearing) is lying to themselves. I get it — I wanted it to be The Return, as well. But come on .. I never expect the dialog / script to be great in a Marvel movie, but this is in contention with “Captain Marvel” as the franchise’s biggest turd.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Adams…
