I’d like to be your friend, but friendship isn’t possible.
RIP Bruno Ganz. Your performance in this movie was just as wonderful as your mustache.
This is a real wild ride. Like a French New Wave Spaghetti Western. Just a completely phantasmagorical, Jodorowskyesque crime thriller set over the course of one evening. Makes terrific use of an unconventional structure that keeps things very exciting. Feels like the best of 70s genre cinema.
THE RAID who? This movie has some of the most brutal hand to hand combat I’ve seen in an action film. The hotel room set-piece is one of the most exciting fight scenes I have seen full stop. Soderbergh knows exactly how use the non-linear structure of this movie to keep things mysterious and exciting, not to mention an excellent example of show, don’t tell, as well as how the absence of music during key scenes raises the tension to unbelievable heights.
HAYWIRE is a modern action masterpiece and I don’t think I see people talk about it much, which is fuckin crazy.
Astonishing in the way Cosmatos is able to use such psychedelic, visceral sound and imagery while maintaining a an incredible level of emotion. Character development is off the charts. So much more astonishing and mature than BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW. Everything about MANDY is a purely visceral, romantic and heartfelt film that is simultaneously so utterly batshit crazy, violent, and dense.
This is the future of genre cinema. Dense, visceral, massively exciting, and violent as hell.
