An occasionally gorgeous and occasionally thrilling heist film with an amazingly kinetic soundtrack. However, Thief is also a frequently uninteresting melodrama following a cynically induced rise-and-fall arc for a character that's equally uninteresting. Sure, James Caan's hot-headed yet shell-shock temperament may lead to a mildly exciting finale of self-destruction, but at 2 hours Thief is far too long to keep my attention. Some technically engaging action sequences, but spliced too far apart. My first true experience with Michael Mann ends up a misfire. That is all.
