  • Searching

About 12 minutes into my showing of Searching an old man asked in a loud voice “Is This Searching?!” That got a chuckle from the crowd, because the first section on this film does recall Pixar’s Up, rather than your run of the mill thriller. Searching manages to be as emotional as it is harrowing.

Debra Messing is very bad in this. It’s almost as if she’s doing a poor Mariska Hargitay impersonation. Cho does a good job of keeping the film moving in his monologues.

    Punisher: War Zone

Eh. Bloody but ridiculously slapstick. I’m not sure who this was made for.

    Best F(r)iends: Volume Two

Probably the most surprising thing about Best Friends Volume 2 is that the saga actually has a payoff. While convoluted and rambling, there’s a fun story buried under the sophomoric filmmaking and the endless David Lynch inspired sequences. It’s improbable fun that sometimes you laugh with and sometimes you laugh at.

Rick Edward is a true standout as a failed football star putting on a Clint Eastwood impression. His quips and stories inject a great deal of energy and humor into the proceedings.

    Call Me by Your Name

This coming of age story feels a little anemic when it comes in the same year that gave us Ladybird.  Call Me By Your Name is a well made, but rambling movie that could have stood to lose 30 minutes.
