  • Skid Row Marathon

    Skid Row Marathon

An understated but powerful documentary on redemption through running. All of the main characters were very open and had their flaws and strengths right there in front of you. Primarily, Craig Mitchell – the Judge who started the running club – who comes across almost as a modern day Francis of Assisi.

Being a runner, the one thing I could have done more with was the insight as to how running made the participants feel. How it changed their mental health and gave them focus.

  • Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé

    Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé

A truly spectacular performance that deconstructs all of Beyoncé's tracks and rebuilds them in such a way to become a new living, breathing narrative. As a concert film it roars but I found the behind the scenes moments a little light. Feeling more like DVD extras rather than an exploration of the physical and emotional toll it took to stage the production.

The first half was a confusing mess. Then the title card appeared and it really Bi Gan.

    I’m so sorry.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

“Darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time... The stars wheeled overhead, and every day was as long as a life age of the earth... But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I've been sent back until my task is done.”

This is both a Gandalf quote and a fairly accurate description of the feeling you get when watching this during a Lord Of The Rings all-nighter.
