Cruella ★★★

Drawing once again from The Hundred and One Dalmatians (1956) novel by Dodie Smith, Disney takes a third swing at a live-action adaption of their beloved animated adventure comedy One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) but with a villainous prequel twist similar to Maleficent (2014).

Craig Gillespie‘s crime comedy Cruella (2021) wows with a surprisingly dark, non-standard origin story adept at delivering form-fitting homages set to heavily stylized visuals and decade appropriate music. However, the effort is by no means flawless. Cruella (2021) regularly gets lost in itself, wandering aimlessly until a big reveal gets it back on track. The costuming oscillates wildly between great and terrible. And, of course, the ending misses lining up with the original story by enough of a margin that it’s obnoxious.
