First Time Films of 2023 List - Click HERE
Amélie has been on my watchlist for a very long time, so it’s about time I finally got around to watching it. Unfortunately, I was hoping to enjoy this film more than I did. I appreciate its qualities: dynamic color grading, unique sets, interesting characters, etc., but it is too slow for me. The story never feels like it’s building towards something, rather just things that are happening the in Amélie’s life. This makes the standard two hour runtime feel longer than it actually is. Also, the humor didn’t work for me mostly. Most of the comedic moments just didn’t register as “funny” in my mind. Likely, that’s just an issue with me because I have such a bizarre sense of humor. Overall, I appreciate Amélie for its uniqueness and quirkiness, and I enjoyed it enough, but it wasn’t a favorite for me.
