I watched this for my af-am class and found it surprisingly nuanced. not sure if it was intentionally so, but cool.

one thing to notice about this movie is the way that race and class intersect. the Biddles, despite being white, are oppressed by concepts of whiteness as well (Ray Biddle says “[Brooks is] smart, he went to college. I’m garbage, remember?”, Edie is clearly ashamed to be from Beaver Canal and her shame is easily exploited).

    another interesting point…

watched this for a class - it tackles an important topic but executes it through a white-savior lens

this is such a greta gerwig movie lol. I was a little worried that this would be a love story about a quirky character being appreciated for who she is yadda yadda. I like that the movie doesn’t get super into her love life; the driving conflict isn’t a lack of romance and it also doesn’t need to be because there’s plenty of other things to worry about. there are times when you can tell she’s wanting to be in love, but also doesn’t an amazing friendship kind of provide a similar, other-dimensional happiness?
