Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of the Downward Spiral

When you synchronize The End of Evangelion (1997) with The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails, the result you end up with is an apocalypse/a downward spiral that is played out on both a grand and personal scale

Needless to say, it was quite a mind-blowing experience; like the way certain lyrics & beats end up being nearly perfectly juxtaposed with almost every scene of the film is extraordinary

- Mr. Self Destruct | having this as the opening track for the movie is crazy. Especially when you hear the wild rhythm towards the end of the song play over the last meeting between Gendo & Fuyutsuki and Seele; it really makes those Monoliths more menacing than they already are

- Piggy | hearing the lyrics “nothing can stop me now” as Misato is heading up to the command bridge/the Magi supercomputer is being hacked by Seele/Ritsuko inputs a command to override the  Magi system/ just as Gendo says “We have Adam and Lilith” to which Fuyutsuki replies “That would certainly make the old men nervous” is a great juxtaposition

- Heresy & March of the Pigs | these two songs play just as the JSSDF soldiers start attacking Nerv headquarters, enough said

- Closer | this track starts playing once Gendo meets Rei in Central Dogma/ the lyric “you get me closer to God” syncs just as Misato shoots a soldier point blank/ the lyric “Help me, I broke apart my insides“ lines up with a cool shot of a destroyed hallway/the song’s bridge lines up really well with the shot of the spinal columns in the Eva graveyard/ the lyric “you can have my isolation” is synced to a well framed shot of Shinji and Misato in a parking garage and the two are separated by a tire; some great juxtapositions

Eraser | this song starts at the exact moment when Asuka wakes up and begins to fight the JSSDF in Eva Unit 02, which is synced to the lyrics “how did you get so big, how did you get so strong”, cool juxtaposition

I Do Not Want This | syncs up along side Ritsuko’s final scene with Gendo in Terminal Dogma really well

- Hurt | having this play during Third Impact works just as well as Komm Süsser Tod/ the way the lyrics “you can have it all; my empire of dirt; I will let you down; I will make you hurt” sync up with the scenes of Lilith ascending from the Earth + the Seele Monoliths shutting down & just as Keel Lorenz turns into LCL is too perfect/ the lyrics “beneath the stains of time; the feelings disappear; you are someone else; I am still right here; what have I become; my sweetest friend; everyone I know goes away in the end“ play right at the part where everyone at Nerv turns into LCL works so well / also, the album ends after the Tree of Life fuses into Lilith’s forehead; and just as the song ends, there’s a shot that cuts to black. It’s a perfect way to end the experience

etc.

At the end of the day, I know this is all just a crazy coincidence, but it’s still a really cool experiment
