Bel Canto

This film looks quite beautiful. There’s a real richness to the cinematography. But the emotional beats did not land. I think it was a tall order, in a tale of Stockholm Syndrome like this, to move from the tension of the hostage-taking into the relationship building in 2 hours. I didn’t feel invested enough in these characters. I also really wanted that Watanabe-Moore romance to sizzle, but I don’t think they were given enough to work with. And I won’t even get into the problematic class politics of the film...
