Biidaaban (The Dawn Comes)

Amanda Strong is a damn genius. Just on a technical level, this is stop motion animation on a whole other level. The artistry of her puppets and sets is astonishing.

And then we have the content. I’m a white settler woman. This movie wasn’t made for me. I imagine it is even more powerful when you have the cultural knowledge and references. But what struck me in this short about a young   indigenous woman trying to revive maple syrup tapping in an urban space, was how much dread and danger there was for her. How unwelcome and unsafe she felt on her traditional territory, trying to honour her traditions.   It was painful to watch and embarrassing and made me want to strive to be a better ally, to do better, to build a better city.
