Melissa McDowell’s review published on Letterboxd :
If you loved the book, you’re going to love this adaptation. It’s faithful to the source and the emotional beats hit hard. Amandla is wonderful, but Russell Hornsby absolutely blew me away as Mav. I’m not sure casting KJ Apa was the greatest idea - he was the only character that didn’t ring true to the one in my head. In his defense, they didn’t do much with the love and friendships subplots - but absolutely the right decision to jettison this for the central story of police brutality and racism. I cried through parts of this film with a crowd of folks in Orlando. It’s worth making this one a communal experience in a theatre.
