I had never heard of this film until I noticed Adam Cook uses it as his forum avatar on RLLMUK and has it listed as a favourite film on letterboxd. I thought if Adam, who watches about 4 films A DAY, has it as a favourite it's got to be worth a watch.
He's right, it's very good. Melville's clean, clinical shots revealing the cold heart of our anti-hero, the cooler-than-cool Costello. Whilst I wasn't blown away by the film, it's easy to see why it has it's fans. It has an extremely contemporary feel, I still find it hard to believe that it was made close to 50 years ago.
