Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★★

Even though this wasn't next on my Netflix streaming watchlist, I decided to tackle this nearly two and half hour movie today. I wanted to watch it one day during the weekend because I didn't want to try it after working all day. To be honest, it didn't feel like such a long movie while I watch it. I did check to see how much time was left, but not very often.

I thought that the story for this movie was okay. It kind of promises to be the evolution of the zombie genre and I felt it fell a bit flat there. The story has to do with a group of mercenaries who are hired to crab a whole lot of money out of a vault after Las Vegas has fallen to zombies. They have walled off the city and a group of zombies, called alphas, see it as their home now. Of course, there will be a war between the two eventually.

The alphas were interesting in that the original zombie sees himself as the king and he even has a queen. He can make other alphas but the other alphas can only make what we have always known as zombies, or shamblers as they are called in the movie. They aren't really smart or fast like the alphas are. This isn't the first zombie movie to use faster or smarter zombies, but I don't know if any other zombie movies have used the kingdom thing with zombies before. The only thing I really saw as bringing something new to the table had to do with the queen, but I will let those who haven't watched this movie yet find that out for themselves.

That part of the movie was also interesting but so glassed over. This wasn't the only thing that felt that way in this movie. That was the main reason I just gave this movie my average rating. It is an enjoyable movie and has a lot of nice action and some good effects in it, which is what made it fun for me to watch. On the other hand, it spends so much time setting things up for the raid just to have some plot points feel rushed. They go through a lot to show what is happening to a certain character that is taken by the alpha zombies just to have his story end quickly once he is shown once again. It felt like a waste. Even so, it was a fun movie. I don't know if I will be watching it again anytime soon just because of how long a movie it is, but I'm glad I got around to it.
