I'm sure it has more impact on a 50 foot screen than on a 50 inch television, but The Guns of Navarone just seems thoroughly pedestrian and by-the-numbers, lacking the scale, the inventiveness, or the engaging characters of the best wartime caper movies. There are certainly good scenes. And the performances aren't bad. And it seems like it should be a gripping adventure. But it isn't.
