    sludge.

showing-off-with-a-camera as an excuse for lacking a vision. script with one gimmick & nothing to say (there is the false promise of interesting plotting when dever kills the first alien, though the plot can't sustain its own occasional jolts of energy. also, side note, the page that circulated online found innocent; let writers have a little fun). the tension and horror are fine; low-key, occasionally fresh (the peek behind the fridge door), but often typical. scare-factor comparable to the messengers…

a generous adaptation. one of the great stories about writing, and warm and gentle in its instruction on what it is to live a good life. marmee's wisdom, hard-earned, thought-through, and lived-in, is the heart of armstrong's vision.

and, it's beautifully blocked and shot. the house comes alive in the march girls' movements; even the close-ups are filled with their motion (see: the close-up on marmee in the candlelight as each of the girls kisses her goodnight.)
