Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman ★★★★½

Deliciously brilliant & shocking. Carey Mulligan is the best. She’s clearly one of the most underrated consistent actresses working today and she’s explosively fantastic here in what’s my favorite female lead performance of the year. I still have to see Frances McDormand in Nomadland either today or tomorrow, Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of Woman (will be available for streaming on Netflix next week) & a few others of course but she’s my favorite so far, I just really LOVE what Carey did here and I hate saying this but I still think Wildlife is her best performance but this one is definitely a close 2nd (i’ll obviously rewatch both to see if mind changes). Bo Burnham is wonderful, he steals every single scene. He’s hilarious. It’s great to see him get more appreciation, he’s a funny dude. Clancy Brown & Jennifer Coolidge give solid supporting work as the parents. The cast is filled with an awesome ensemble of cameos such as: Alison Brie, Laverne Cox, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Max Greenfield, Alfred Molina, Molly Shannon, Sam Richardson, Connie Britton, Chris Lowell & Adam Brody. All of them put in great work.

The writing is razor-sharp. Emerald Fennell’s direction is tight. The soundtrack is 🔥🔥. Anthony Willis’ score works very well with the movie and tone of it, I dug it. There are several scenes you can tell Margot Robbie had her handprints on, I mean she is one of the producers along with Carey Mulligan (executive) of this thing 😊.

This will be controversial for some for sure but it’s a truly special thriller that will stick with you for a long while thanks to Carey Mulligan’s powerhouse performance and a brilliantly-executed dark comedy-thriller debut from Emerald Fennell who has a very bright future ahead of her and I can’t wait to see what she brings next. Oh and those last 20 minutes are INSANE!!!! That ending, bro! I FREAKING LOVED IT.
