Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood

Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood ★★★★

I'm not exactly sure why Richard Linklater became less critically fashionable after BOYHOOD but it makes me sad. It probably has something to do with Jonathan Rosenbaum retiring and Robin Wood being dead. Nonetheless, this is an excellent memory piece, an essay film masquerading as a narrative. The use of rotoscoping to suggest a vanished world is fresh and beautiful -- as different from A SCANNER DARKLY (nightmarish and druggy) as that film was from WAKING LIFE (pulsating and dreamy). And Jack Black's narration is magnificent.
