Michele’s review published on Letterboxd:
Well, now I know where the Penguin came from.
It’s always fascinating to watch foundational classics after a lifetime of seeing their influence in subsequent films. The shadows and twists, the issues of authority and identity — I’ve seen Caligari referenced a ton of times without knowing it.
I adored the tilted and painted sets and the way the performers moved in the distorted space. The film took a bold creative stance that paid off. Grotesquely beautiful.
