    Not quite my tempo…..

Whiplash is fucking immaculate. I don’t think I can say enough good things about this movie. It’s so simple in it’s story & setup, trying to pursue greatness at all costs, but the execution is just amazing. Chazelle builds so much tension throughout, especially in the first scene in the band room when Fletcher shows up and they play Whiplash for the first time. The entire movie, it’s brutal to watch Neiman strive for his version of…

First thought, Jordan Peele is fantastic. I love his vision, the aesthetic he builds, the narrative he weaves. Coming off of Get Out, it would have been easy to have a letdown for his second film. But I think Us is on par in many ways, even if it didn’t reach the cultural significance that Get Out did.

Touching more on his vision & flair. The movie is LITTERED with visual nods to anything and everything regarding connection, doubles, etc. His…

Expected to not really like this, thought it might be a his-bore-ical period piece drama. But I actually came away really liking it. I thought the screenplay and the way they presented the film was great. A multiple chapter setup, showing differing perspectives. Just a really interesting way to create the narrative. It makes the movie that much longer (2.5 hours) but it didn’t feel long to me at all. There were places you could cut I’m sure, but not…

We live in a twilight world. And there are no friends at dusk.

    Previous review from 12.17.20 HERE.

The most important lesson for me from this viewing: the minutiae of every intricate exact detail doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t. It doesn’t affect your viewing. This is blatantly put out there by Nolan when Neil is touring the freeport and his guide is expositing on and on and it just drowns him out. The details aren’t as vitally important as the…

So I enjoyed watching this, but I don’t know, for some reason it just felt like they came up with everything first, and then had to shoehorn it all into a movie? The songs, the family strife, why it all went wrong, the pacing. It just didn’t speak to me. It was cute, the animation was fantastic, and it’s well made on all accounts. I just didn’t connect with it in a major way and it just didn’t feel unique enough. Just wasn’t for me I guess!

I think it’s weird that I hang out with Gary and his 15 year old friends…

This was a good one. It's a coming of age love story, a love letter to 70s California. But also an anti coming of age story? Gary vs Alana. He wants to be everything but 15. She doesn't know what she wants to do (she says as much early in the movie) and eventually, defeated by what "being an adult" is like, she runs…
