The Card Counter

The Card Counter ★★★½

I love how Paul Schrader’s ability to play against the audience’s expectations feels less of a “gotcha” gimmick and more of a deeper exploration of the themes already established in the film. What he lacks in fine craftsmanship, he makes up for intentionality. Compared to a lot of filmmakers decades past their commercial peak, at the very least Schrader is making films that feel like they’re made by somebody who’s more than grateful to still be making films.

Tiffany Haddish & Oscar Isaac’s chemistry is great in this film. Might be the best romantic connection in a Schrader film yet.


Absolutely amazing that they were willing to release this film on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 weekend. Bold af
