Win It All

Win It All ★★★★

BY FAR the best film that Netflix has ever put out and it brings me great joy to finally say that. Joe Swanberg's first scripted film Win It All is a dense and briskly paced character study that rings true to the works of John Cassavetes with richly developed raw relationships between the characters and a rough grainy aesthetic to boot. It reminds me of where American independent filmmaking started, not this hipster cutesie stuff that we're hit with now, but movies that feel so fucking real and move so fluidly and were about realistically built situations. Jake Johnson does absolute powerhouse work here and his performance is only enhanced by an amazing supporting cast of character actors like Joe Lo Truglio, Aislinn Derbez, and Keegan-Michael Key. Swanberg may have departed from his usual unconventional improv-focused filmmaking but his natural knack for building amazing characters in desperate situations hasn't been lost, it's merely been improved.
