    some lovely images, with the titular prison becoming a claustrophobic, brutalist nightmare, but not enough focus narratively to work alongside them. the scenes between morgan and anne feel especially laborious and uninteresting. that being said, chester morris is really good here, always commanding attention even when wallace beery, in full foghorn-come-to-life mode, tries in loud desperation to steal it from him.

    ... well, it definitely feels like the kind of film that wins the grand jury prize at sundance (derogatory).

    the biggest issue with A Thousand and One is rockwell's screenplay: so devoid of life, of personality, of singularity, and grappling with too many strands that never form anything compelling or profound. the kind of derivative and trite first feature that makes you just wish you were instead watching something it reminds you of that isn't full of the rote, nondescript…
