Incredible use of music and total, detached control of the visual medium. Kubrickian horror with a dark and perverted Lanthimos irony on top.
The sick dark humour in particular makes it an original masterpiece and reaffirms the absolute mastery of absurdity that was in display in Dogtooth. This time Lanthimos just takes it into real art horror territory. Visceral, powerful cinema.
It has some of the laziest provocation of his whole career. Although the victimization of the main character of himself doesn't necessarily mean Lars agrees, all things considered it's dangerous territory that's not even discussed (as are some of his other misogynistic tendencies) and is deeply unfunny.
It also includes by far his career's cruelest violence against women that is later played for laughs. I've seen much worse but at this delicate moment I don't think he'll survive the provocation.…
