It doesn’t hit the heights of Cronenberg’s previous body horror films, and may warrant a second viewing before final judgement, but it’s a vast improvement over his more recent work. It’s funny to me that Vigo almost always plays someone undercover when he collaborates with Cronenberg, and I’m not sure it was totally necessary in this case, but hey, it’s their thing.
Pretty bonkers, and I'm still not entirely sure what the film/play is getting at, but I enjoyed my time spent with these truly fucky characters. Love that Juno Temple plays Dotti as the smartest character in the room, or at least a mirror in which most of the characters dump their worst impulses, fears and desires.
I really loved this film, though it walked a seriously fine line for me at times. This could have easily been another Dylan Dog-type (low budget with an outsized script and poor execution on most fronts), but the script is exceptional here and the filmmaking hides the low budget in clever ways. Kinda thought it was going to have a Big Fish ending for some strange reason.
