Blade Runner 2049 ★★★★★

Probably my favorite thing about this film is that you can so clearly feel its influences (2000s Spielberg, the original Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Denis' Enemy) while also seeing it forge new ground- it's told in such a slowly expanding, mystifying way that its interesting, clever themes stand up next to the themes of the classic 1982 film. 2049 doesn't ruin the original nor is it a bad film itself; Denis has done the seemingly impossible, creating- with excellent performances, a compelling narrative, a good score, and some of the best cinematography ever put to screen- a film that feels like an expansion, not a copy.
