I Was Born, But...

I Was Born, But... ★★★★½

I Was Born, But…. Is an early silent film directed by Ozu. I was surprised by how funny it is. It involves a middle class family who move into a new neighborhood. The movie explores the trials and tribulations the family experience as they adjust to their new life. Beside being hilarious in parts, this film is very poignant. Overall, it’s a lovely tale of family. I love the way it compares and contrast problems younger and older generations struggle with. It also comments on the wide gap that can occur between our childish dreams and adult realities. Overall, this is one of my favorite Ozu films. His films are amazingly timeless and universal!
