Yorgos Lanthimos directs this wildly entertaining and original historical comedy that is one of the funniest this year. It stars Olivia Colman as the British monarch Queen Anne with Rachel Weisz as as Lady Sarah Churchill and Emma Stone as her servant cousin, Abigail Masham, competing for Anne's attention in early 18th-Century England. The performances are outstanding with a tight script that is endlessly surprising. There are excellent music choices incorporated into the film from Bach to Elton John. The movie also showcases some really great cinematography. While some of the film is based on fact, much of it is not historically accurate. However, what is not to like about a movie that features lots of bunnies, duck races, authentic dance moves from the 1700s (😂), and lots of grotesquerie? This is the first movie by Lanthimos that I have seen, but The Favorite has inspired me to watch some of his other films which I hear are good. Overall, this was one of the best films of the year.
