This is one of those pulpy indie flicks where the entire world exists in this one town and everyone’s unhinged and Dennis Hopper finagles his way in there somehow. My favorite Crispin Glover performance by far. The perfect vehicle to let his freak flag wave in a proud sea of wackiness. And Joshua John Miller killing this and Near Dark back to back at like age 12 and then basically disappearing from acting. What a legend.

Sad fist bump. More confirmation that this has been a fun summer of blockbusters. The newest entry to the sci-fi creature feature (and a gorgeous creature at that) subgenre is managed with tongue in cheek creativity. The awful aspects of entertainment and lengths people go for a paycheck and ounce of fame is just as frightening as being eaten alive. During my initial viewing a week ago I thought this was a pretty damn good horror flick. Then it got under my skin and I couldn't get it out of my head. For me, a great horror movie keeps me up at night, but a brilliant motion picture allows me to analyze it for days. Seeing it again has yielded much more personal praise for the film and its craftsmanship.
Toni Collette deserves every award for her shear primal screams…
