Tempted to give this 4 stars but I'm just not sure about the ending.
Everything up to that was superbly done. Rory Kinnear and Jessie Buckley are both wonderful in their opposite roles, the aesthetics and tone displayed are wonderfully judged.
But until I can get my head around the ending and how it relates to everything else, I don't feel I can give it more than this. Yet!
Perfectly serviceable high school nostalgi-comedy.
Hits some good notes, others miss the mark but overall, this was OK (and probably only because it was around my era that they were harking back to).
It has been a while since I've watched a Vietnam war film. Its been even longer since I've seen one this good.
Spike Lee has brought a huge amount of emotion and cameraderie to this trip down memory lane, but not only that the style he has chosen to tell his story really adds a shine to the already excellent proceedings.
The cast are all superb, especially Delroy Lindo and Clarke Peters, but they all more than pull their own…
This feels like an adaptation from an audio drama, with dialogue taking the centre stage and the action and camerawork being kept to a minimum. I struggled to get into the pace of the dialogue to begin with but it does settle down eventually.
It is all impressively done, however the unfolding of the story left me with a lot to be desired and it felt more like the pilot of a TV series than a feature film, leaving me wanting to dig deeper into it all.
