Ministry of Fear has a promising start (and the subsequent carnival and train sequences are corkers); it's a shame that it declines considerably once Milland's character gets to London and tries to figure out what's happening. The conclusion to the spy ring mystery just fizzles out. Not helping matters is Marjorie Reynolds and a terrible attempt at an Austrian accent.
Thoroughly entertaining, with De Palma functioning as lively raconteur, doling out plenty of bite and insight. It's unfortunate that his post-2000 career doesn't get nearly as much as time devoted to it as his earlier films. The result is a rushed feeling as this wraps up. This is one film where I would love to see some extended scenes and deleted footage.
A thoroughly uncomfortable film that succeeds in putting the viewer through the wringer. Wisely, there is no attempt at armchair psychology or critical examination of the protagonist; we are only given a bit of background information from the main character's mother regarding her son.
Since Peter Greene only has a minimal amount of dialogue, the character's body language is integral to demonstrating the internal disconnect that plagues him. Even in more mundane moments, the character's palpable agitation is very hard…
