The criterion channel continues to deliver. A truly unique cinematic experience. An absolutely haunting, dreamlike symphony of sounds and images.
What is it about? Who knows? Who cares? It's about dangerous desires. It’s about necessary sadness. It’s about vicarious joy. It’s about the purpose of existence. The meaning of Stalker has been debated to death and will continue to be analyzed until the last movie goer dies.
That room for interpretation is not only inherent but integral to the movie. Stalker is an exercise in anticipation. It is endless foreplay with no payoff but with the constant promise of a tantalizing climax. The objective is to draw you in, to make you look closer. To hang the carrot of science fiction and deliver over two and a half hours worth of philosophical ruminations, intellectual banter, and introspective monologues.
