Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody ★½

mmm yes Queen songs good I like Queen songs oh Queen songs in movie? mm yes movie good, I like movie.

There's a new disease going around in Hollywood. Well, it's not new per se, but it's certainly more prevalent. I call it "The Force Awakens Effect". The basic premise is that the producers know what sells, they know what people like and they know that because it's already been sold, so they're going to repackage it and sell it again. It's the worst of capitalism because it masquerades as art when really it's just a mutated form of something good and it tricks you into associating the good thing with the new bullshit. Once a thing knows its popular, knows that you're going to see something about it no matter what, it can do whatever the fuck it wants and you'll laugh and cry and watch no matter what. Bohemian Rhapsody is objectively one of the greatest songs ever written, it'd be hard to contest that. I know that. You know that. Bryan Singer knows that. 20th Century Fox knows that. And that's all it takes. There's nothing new or interesting or stylish added to the story of Freddie Mercury. There's little to no conflict. There's no cohesion to the songs or insight into their creative process. Things just happen and then they end. Every character is a prop. But! Those songs you like? That you've heard your entire life? They're all in it. Well, the greatest hits at least. And apparently that's all people want. So is it harmless entertainment? Maybe, but it sure as hell isn't good.

Also I spent a lot of time thinking about a David Bowie biopic starring Tilda Swinton directed by Luca Guadagnino. Thank you and goodnight.
