This is the movie that finally broke me in that I was only interested in the minions and did not care about the human characters at all.

Clearly a movie with A Message™️ that kind of completely failed at the execution?
Florence Pugh continues to prove that she is one of the greats. Everything else around her either didn’t work or didn’t have time to fully develop. It feels uncomfortably male-gazed for a movie directed by a woman.
I also really didn’t like the score at all, so I was shocked to realize it was from John Powell, because I love so much of his music.
Iliza and Margaret Cho were pretty good, but everything else was just…fine? The whole courtroom finale felt really out of place, and the cuts back to her standup performances didn’t add that much either. And some of the dialogue/the “message” seemed a little heavy handed at times.
Wow I really loved this. I quickly fell in love with this family and wanted them to be safe and happy.
It’s a powerful and relatable tension between wanting to protect and do the best for your family and staying in a place that’s familiar and what you know.
Jude Hill is absolutely fantastic - one of the best child actors I’ve seen in a while. And Jamie Dornan is wonderful always (and he sings in this!!) and Caitriona Balfe…
