    ★★★★½

One of the most beautifully shot movies of all time. The ballet scene alone warrants these superlatives, however the red colour palette that permeates the screen: the red curtains, the red robes and the red couches all help make this film a true visual spectacle.

The performances and script are also amazing. The film deals with the dilemma of love vs. work, and also deals with the way in which people can obsess over art.

The Issue with the movie, is that it foreshadows the ending a bit too obviously. The movie also sometimes, relies too heavily on its melodramatic tropes.

The best haunted house movie I've seen in a long time.

This subversion of the typical film noir is undeniably one of the greatest movies in cinematic history. The cinematography perfectly captures the melancholy and dread of post war vienna and the zither score is an appropriate antidote to the melodramatic orchestral scores that were most prominent in the 40s.

The cast is superb, but is highlighted by a career best performance from Orson Welles, who plays a charismatic villain, that is both menacing and somewhat sympathetic.

Great performances and the director manages to create a very tangible suspenseful atmosphere. But the twist is extremely predictable and has been done more effectively in better movies.
