    The Mummy

    ★★★½

Hammer's third gothic horror romp borrows the plot of some '40s Universal Mummy movies, reunites Lee and Cushing, and delivers an entertaining take on the classic monster story. The film is sometimes a bit dramatically flat and exposition-heavy, but the direction and set design, performances, and the sight of Lee smashing down doors as the vengeful mummy more than makes up for it.

Man, this film has aged horrendously. How did I ever think this was good? The good: Westerberg songs, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden. The Bad: literally everything else.

One of my all-time favourite movies - cult movie perfection. The dialogue, the characters, the performances and the whacked-out mix of punk rock teen alienation and sci-fi conspiracy hijinks make for a brilliantly original one-off. And the new blu-ray looks GREAT!

Not awful, just ordinary... those in-jokes and meta-references that once seemed so clever and fresh now just feel tired, and it's way too drawn-out and repetitive. Still, Craven delivers a few suspenseful sequences and the 'teen' cast provide some youthful energy even if the old-timers (Campbell, Cox, Arquette) clearly just turned up for the pay cheque.
