This has been on my watchlist for a while now but I've managed to avoid finding out anything about it other than 'Sam Neill and a kid in the woods'. I had no idea how they would get there, and what else would be happening - but it was great fun finding out. The plot was generally unexpected and kept me guessing throughout.
Writer/Director Taika Waititi's quirky humour is just as amusing as it was in What We Do in the Shadows but here it's combined with a lot of heart with very engaging characters and relationships.
Maybe the only negative was Rhys Darby's character. I like him and didn't mind the character but it just felt out of place in this film, especially for where he arrives in the story.
This film has also made me more confident about the next film Waititi will be directing; Thor: Ragnarok. Although he isn't writing it I wasn't sure how his approach would meld with what should be "the end of days". I'm still not 100% convinced but I definitely will be seeking out more of his stuff as I like his humour and visual flair.
In the meantime I suggest you check out this one!
