Not usually a good sign when a movie urges you to watch its overt influences rather than the thing itself. And at various points during this rambling scattershot of southern gothic Americana, I wanted to watch There Will Be Blood, Place Beyond The Pines, Blue Ruin, and Brimstone instead. In moments, The Devil All The Time achieves great intensity from its strong ensemble cast (Pattinson is chameleonic once again, but Tom Holland owns his angry tightrope role too), pitch-perfect atmosphere, and disturbing violence. But the connective slog sent my mind wandering to better iterations of this crime drama’s themes and elements.
