    This film is not as I have seen said an exploration of some inverse of the 'white man's burden'. Rather it is an exploration of an essential characteristic of western man, embodied also in men like Richard Burton and Joseph Conrad, which is a world-curiosity and adventurousness of spirit, a willingness to intermingle with other cultures and penetrate other ways of life - a characterstic today often resentfully slandered as 'oritentalism'.
