Long Weekend

Long Weekend ★★★★

A couple's disintegrating relationship plays out in the Australian countryside. As they bicker and fail to repair their marriage, they let out their frustrations on the local wildlife... and the wildlife begins to fight back.

Long Weekend is a bleak, harrowing film - the Australians do harrowing so well - with incredibly frightening sound design. The squawks, bellows and shrieks of the outback haunt the leading couple from the moment they arrive, stretching the tensions between them way beyond breaking point.

While there are a few lighter moments, this is a very dark and sometimes difficult experience, but it manages to turn what could have been a ridiculous premise into a frightening one that really frays the nerves. The sound of a wounded manatee dragging itself up a beach in pitch darkness will stick with me for a long time. Shudder.
