Skyfall ★★★

And here on rewatch I still prefer Quantum of Solace. I can’t deny the Javier Bardem and Roger Deakins work here, but the pace is iffy and no setpiece’s end lives up to its beginning.

Basically it goes on forever, which is a problem without Casino Royale’s interrogation into Bond or strong enough dialogue. So we get a nice wonky family but a movie totally uninterested in letting them be fun or funny.

Sam Mendes is just an odd fit, with conversational scenes never as interesting as the past two movies, and action scenes generally sub-par excuses for one great Deakins shot. It opens so strong and I want to care, but this is the first Daniel Craig Bond to lack a fascinating, new take for his performance.
