Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure ★★★★

Fun fact: although squarely in the intended demographic for this movie when it was released (I was 13), I figured it looked too stupid even for me to enjoy. I only watched it on TV after I heard friends mentioning "So-Crates" all the time, which struck me as the height of comedy gold.

Which of course it is, but I find it hard to explain the appeal of this movie. I don't think it's just a nostalgia thing for those of us who lived through these times. Too many younger generations have discovered and loved this movie for that.

It's a certain level of irreverence. Absolutely nothing in this movie is meant to be taken the slightest bit seriously. And yet, somehow, there's an incredibly sweet appeal to the characters of Bill and Ted. It might be the most positive, well-intentioned teen comedy ever made.

Why are these incredibly broad impersonations of historical characters so damn funny? Honestly, I only have to look at Socrates in any one of the scenes he's in to laugh out loud. I hadn't seen this movie in many years - not since the early 90's in fact - and I laughed A LOT. It shouldn't be as funny as it is, but it somehow just works.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure just has its own weird magic. If nothing else, I'm glad they made a new one, because it triggered me to rewatch these - and I may never have done that otherwise.
