It's a Wenders film, so you know he's going to take his time telling the story - a lot of The American Friend features the slow, meditative sequences and sublime cinematography, mainly focusing on the gritty environment of the Hamburg docklands. But there are some terrific action sequences as well. Dennis Hopper does a fascinating take on Tom Ripley, but Bruno Ganz is fantastic in the lead role - it's his movie. Beautiful and fascinating stuff.
