Weird but compelling.
I feel so bad saying this but I found this extremely....mid. It pulls from different Black love movies from the 90s like Love Jones and Mo Better Blues but it doesn't really have anything to say on its own, if that makes sense...also the two leads didn't have any chemistry, I didn't see anything between them that made me think "Ok makes total sense that they're moving so fast."
Also, I'm sorry but Kofi Siriboe does not have the chops…
What a beautiful movie. It flows in and out of time, tracking two Black deaf women who find (and lose, maybe find again) love in early and late 20th century Chicago. There's so much here to absorb: the Great Migration, disability, illness, and how love can be a sweet balm to the hardships we all face in life and it can also, simply not be enough.
