Ben Affleck is the definitive Bruce Wayne. If you've ever read a comic book, this is the Bruce Wayne from those pages. We've never had a great portrayal of the character of Bruce Wayne. No, not even Christian Bale. His Bruce was a mopey, I-hate-my-own-existence, wet blanket. This is the first time we get the vengeful, driven Bruce. And its the fire that Affleck plays him with that spills over into his Batman.
I've always said that anybody can play Batman. For the most part, its the suit thats sells Batman. But again, this is the Batman from the comics. The fighting skills, the agility, and there are several parts in this movie that he is downright scary. Once you see it, say what you will about the film. But even if you don't like it, you'll have to admit that the world of haters out there own Ben Affleck a damn big apology.
Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor...don't let the marketing fool you. This is the slyest, most conniving, in fact the most evil Lex ever presented on screen. A master manipulator with a God complex, and bolstered by an overabundance of self assurance.
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman...rest assured she sells the strength and physicality of Wonder Woman with excess. Obviously she has limited range as an actress, so her lines are limited in the film. Some work, some don't, but its never to a point that takes you out of the movie.
Henry Cavill is given the chance to expand not only as Superman but as Clark Kent. As he faced with the fallout from the battle of Metropolis, he struggles to find his place among people that see him as a threat, and those that expect him to be the savior of their problems.
Amy Adams continues to show off the investigative reporter side of Lois Lane that's never really been represented. Throwing herself in harms way for what she believe is right.
The movie plays out like a game of chess. The first part is all about moving and manipulating all the pieces into position, before the two sides really clash. As is to be expected with a Zack Snyder movie, its amazing looking, and the action sequences are thrilling and impactful. The fight scenes alone are enough to fulfill comic readers dreams.
All that being said, this will be a very divisive movie. There will be people that are pre-programmed it to love it no matter what, just as there are those that decided they hated the movie before a single frame of film was shot. And neither side will ever convince the other. Especially in the internet troll/fanboy DC vs Marvel war that has reached proportions even more ridiculous than the old Star Wars vs Star Trek war.
If you are a fan of the lightweight approach, where everything is resolved and dismissed with a joke, you're going to hate this movie. Its dark and grim. The stakes are played for real, and is taken in a serious manner
