Nicolas Cannizzo’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Donnie Brasco” is a perfect example that the mob never sleeps.
I was pleasantly surprised by how invested I was into this true story. I thought it was going to be just another crime boss gritty drama with more style over substance yet the investigation here takes it’s time giving us room to breathe. There is violence which is expected but the violence is not here to glamorize but to remind the viewer that it is part of every day life for these types of people.
Johnny Depp gives one of my favorite performances if not my favorite in a role that seemed more character study than Lavish adding a personal touch within the two life styles that are set up. Al Pacino Righteously Kills in this as “LEFTY.” I can vouch for that.
Overall, this to me felt like a slow burn borrowing ideas of similar films passed down to the screenplay yet felt fresh and personalized with every chance “Donnie Brasco” had to stand out, and it did for me.
