Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman ★★★★

A scorcher. At first I was worried the script was too predictably structured, but thankfully Emerald Fennell has a few third act tricks up her sleeve.

Elevated by really tight, controlled visuals, immersive sound design (at least from what I could tell on my noise-canceling headphones), and a knockout Carey Mulligan performance that manages to be both cold and warm simultaneously.

Anything that seems overly schematic early on is flipped by the end, when it takes a REALLY dark turn I won’t go into. I’m curious to see how it holds up in future viewings, but in any case there’s a ton of craft and surprising emotion in this jet black character study.

REALLY wish I could have seen it in a theater - a watermarked web screener that skipped and buffered was not the best way.

Two of Fennell’s music cues made my jaw drop.
